VIAMONTE, Walnut Creek

Norie Sato, In the Fold (2020). Corten steel and anodized aluminum.

Chandra Cerrito / Art Advisors was honored to work with the Viamonte development and design team to install site-specific artworks at the beautiful senior living development in Walnut Creek. The project features installations by artists Norie Sato and Nicky Statius. CC/AA worked with the Viamonte team from 2015-2020 to create a public art program, select artists, obtain City approvals, and oversee artwork integration and installation.

In the Fold, a sculptural fence by Sato, separates the project’s courtyard from an adjacent public park. The artwork was inspired by the grand valley oak tree that is directly outside the site and in close proximity to the artwork location. While providing a security function for the facility, In the Fold creates a unique and engaging artwork that emphasizes connectivity, transparency, openness and accessibility with beautiful craftsmanship.

Baskets by Statius is comprised of four luminous sculptures that greet residents, visitors and passersby at the building’s entrance. The fiberglass and 24-karat gold leaf sculptures with forms that allude to vessels symbolize experiences and stories we carry with us throughout our lives. Three of the sculptures—installed in the bioswale and surrounded by New Zealand flax—appear to be floating on top of the vegetation. The fourth, installed at the front entry, greets residents and welcomes visitors.
